Archeological Tours

In the Central Valleys of Oaxaca you will find at least seven archeological zones belonging to the Zapotec people who controlled this region from around 500 BC to 1000 AD. Monte Alban, the first site to be constructed, was the largest and most notable and the Zapotecs who built it reigned there for close to 1,500 years. When Monte Alban finally started to collapse around 900 AD, other sites sprung up, most likely generated by the elites from Monte Alban. Close by, and part of the extensive Monte Alban complex is the newly excavated zone of Atzompa. The next largest zones are Mitla and Yagul.  Although the sites of Lambityeco, Dainzú and Zaachila are comparatively smaller, they are just as important and interesting and should not be missed.
